In the small Italian town of Fondi Italy, located halfway between Naples and Rome, at the foot of Mount Arcano there sits the tranquil sanctuary of the Monastery of St. Magnus (Monastero San Magno). When walking into the monastery you can’t help but feel a sense of peace, beginning with the natural landscape outside.

The Founding
The history of this ancient monastery dates back to the third-century. Sts. Magnus and Paternus took refuge in Mount Arcano when they were escaping the persecution of Emperor Decius. They were later discovered and martyred there.
During the sixth-century, St. Honoratus of Fondi founded the Monastery of St Magnus to honor the location of the martyrs. Many found peace, tranquility, and quietness within the walls of this monastery.
The Rediscovery

Throughout the centuries, the monastery suffered looting, destruction, theft, and later, abandonment. Eventually, it would be acquired by the Archdiocese of Gaeta and adopted into their care.
Over time, many discoveries have been made as they sought to restore the monastery such as frescos depicting the life of St Benedict dating back to the eleventh century.

The Monastery Today
Today, you can journey through the roots of the church from the medieval to the modern where throughout the years it has returned to its original purpose, a place of peace and solitude where people can go to find answers to life and faith. ■
